I am planning to backpack overnight for the first time in my life in Olympic in August and I am checking out the campground sites and I noticed the "red" one that can be reserved via the NP website and the "brown" ones that need no reservation. When I contacted the park, they literally told me that "even if the whole city of Seattle" decided to get a permit for one of those campgrounds, they would grant them (expect for the ones in the coast).
Well, not I am curious about them (in case I dont get a reserved spot), specially Appleton Pass in the High Divide Loop and Lewis Meadow in the Hoh River.
Could someone please provide some firsthand knowledge of these campgrounds ? anything bad ? too congested ? I am just curious why they dont just make all campgrounds reserved with limit of permits.
Thanks !
