I am putting together a couple of itineraries for a spring break backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon. One of the routes would take us past Grapevine Canyon on the Tonto Trail. I have read that there is significant exposure along this section. Does anyone on here know how bad the exposure is and how dangerous that section of trail would be? I am taking my 14 year old son who is not a fan of exposure and want to be fairly confident he could make it safely through that area, both mentally and physically.

I've done it three times. I don't think you have any thing to worry about. If you're on the trail you have zero risk of falling off a cliff.

Just stay away from the Nankoweep.

Great TR, Ben. I could see you doing the Nankoweep. Go for it - your TR would be awesome! Looking forward to yours, too, LarryBoy.
