Zion (half) traverse in April '21?

I just found out I have to have a hip replacement in the near future, so I'm not sure whether I will be able to recon the trail conditions before your trip. It depends on surgery scheduling. Sorry about that.
Wow, really sorry to hear about the hip. Hope surgery goes smooth and you are out doing crazy miles again soon!
John

Yvonne, thanks for the trail report. 6-8" doesn't sound too bad for a month out. I'm still hoping for an open road and no ice/snow in 32 days!

Thanks @Goat and @John Morrow. My sports med doctor and I thought I had a very stubborn case of severe tendinopathy for the past year (I had almost no classic osteoarthritis symptoms), so at least there's a resolution in my near future.

Goat, even substantial snowfall at the lower elevations has been melting within a day, so you'll likely be fine on the KT road opening and trail.

Good luck with your hip @fossana. I hope your recovery is quick and that you are back on the trail in a relatively short period of time. So how did the doctor determine that the hip needed to be replaced? I'm curious because I have been dealing with left hip pain for about two years now.

Thanks, @scatman.
My symptoms were getting worse with PT. It was very apparent once my hip was x-rayed; there was no space where the labrum once was and I had started to wear down my femoral head. I have a long history of hip flexor tendonitis and had a labrum repair in that same hip ~13 years ago. The symptoms, however, were slightly different from what I had experienced in the past in that I had persistent radiating quad pain (not ITBS) and increasing instability. None of the usual tendonitis treatments were working.

p.s. If it's tendinopathy, I would look into the LEAP trial PT exercises.

Fossana, Gosh am Wishing You The Best on This! I have known people who had terrible problems with their hips, had the surgery and are now doing well. Now except for my right ankle, am really healthy. Again, Wishing You The Best!

Thanks for the information @fossana. I did a round of physical therapy for my hip right before the pandemic hit, then a long period of nothing, and my hip slowly got worse over time. I'm now scheduled to see an orthopedic doctor at the U of U the first week of April, so we will see where that leads. I would certainly be interested on how your surgery and recovery go if you choose to have a replacement. Again, good luck.

Scatman, do sincerely wish you the best on your hip. Like I told Fossana, I know a number of people who have had the hip surgery with good success. Sorry that you have such troubles, especially with all of your hiking. Personally am blessed with great hip health. It is my right ankle that bothers me at times. Again Wishing You The Best!
