Hi,
My two friends and I are starting a trip from the Turpin Meadows trailhead on July 26th in an attempt to make it up Younts. It's a 6 day, 5 night trip and itinerary is listed below.
Day 1- Turpin Meadow to Soda Fork Meadows- 5 miles
Day 2- Soda Fork Meadows to Crater Lake- 11 miles
Day 3- Crater Lake to an alpine lake just NE of Marston Pass- 11 miles (Staying two nights, picture attached)
Day 4- Summit Younts. 8 miles roundtrip
Day 5- Alpine lake NE of Marston Pass to outfitter camp along Soda Fork trail - 13.5 miles (picture attached)
Day 6- Outfitter camp along Soda Fork trail to Trail Head- 13.5 miles
I've hike and backpacked in grizzly country for a while, my friends have not. It's their first time doing anything like this. For people who are familiar with the area, any concerns or critiques? It's pretty straight forward, an out-and-back hike. We're coming from Dallas which is a whooping 600 ft above sea level. We'll be leaving Dallas July 25th and stopping in Denver for one night and starting the hike on the 26th. I've looked at elevation and I think with where we're staying each night, we should be okay in terms of altitude sickness.
Biggest question I have is regarding being on the plateau. Being that it's so exposed up there, what do people do if a thunderstorm hits during the day while hiking? Try to get a low point and find some cover? I've explained to my friends that bears, weather, and maybe altitude sickness, will play a role in how the trip unfolds and if we're able to make it up Younts.
Any feedback is appreciated.
