Well, after a year of planning and preparing for their dream trip to the Winds, my dad and brother have backed out two weeks before we leave. Gotta love it. Now I've got to go back to the drawing board because I had planned a point to point from Elkhart to Green River Lakes...but now we won't have two cars. I can't get over how expensive the shuttle from Pinedale Great Outdoors is. I really don't want to pay that much. I also don't want to backtrack 15 miles.

I'll stop venting now and go back to the map.

Bummer! But isn't it only a bit over $100 for them to move your vehicle from Elkhart to GRL? Seems pretty minor in the grand scheme of flying out and spending all that time compared to having to reroute it to an out and back, no?

I think it's $150. And, yeah, I think that's what I just decided: if I can't work out a good loop from Elkhart going north then I'll just pay the $150. Did you exit or start at GRL? I'm worried about my wife's knees on that descent to GRL so I wondered how it was for you.

And the plane tickets were free...the advantages of flying so much for work!

We entered at GRL and came out at Elkhart. Hell, even with two cars, I'd almost rather pay $150 than deal with running that shuttle. Kind of a long drive.

If downhill is a concern, I'd definitely do it GRL->Elkhart. That's a hell of a climb out of GRL. But then again, it's basically all up and down no matter which way you go. I'd still do GRL->Elkhart just for the scenery though. I'd rather start out with a bang and have the mediocre stuff on my last day when I'm just rushing to get out of there.

Hey man don't feel too bad, when I was there last year (Green River Lakes to Big Sandy) my buddy backed out on day 2 of 8! I finished the remaining 87 miles solo after he turned around and went back to the trailhead, to go back into Pinedale and sit in a hotel for a week. That was a real lesson for me in choosing a partner for serious hikes. I only have two buddies I would count on to do a serious trip and if neither is coming with me, I'll just go solo instead of dealing with other people who always end up being unreliable or complainers. Ok, there's my venting, lol.

The shuttle was like $220 for me. Sucks, but if that's your only option, then what can you do?

Yeah, I've got about three or four guys that I can count on for a big trip, but I didn't invite any of them because this was supposed to be a family trip. I won't make that mistake again!
