Windrivers - relaxed trip

I love the second one, with the wide open meadow. I could sit in a place like that all day long. Great looking trip!

Nice! I got chased out of the Winds by the storm this week. West side got very little; east side might be done for the season.

How were the bugs that late in the season? I have the Winds on my to-do list, but I'm hoping to find a time where I won't need a head net on for 10 days.

Generally speaking bugs are pretty mild after mid August.

Non existent. They are usually gone after third week in August

Thanks so much. I'll add it to the list. Unfortunately, we live in Florida, and only get to get away for 1-2 weeks a year, which means one trip. It's a long list.

Spectacular trip, as usual. Just returned from a month out there. Started with the same smoke-filled haze, side-stepped a historic wind-storm, and ended with cold and snow. No goldens, but a few 20+" brown trout from the Green. Will post a TR at some point.

Fill me in how it went.... With the wind we changed to a relaxed trip.. didn't want to be on horse ridge with 50 + mph.. ..

Supposed to lead my hiking group to Titcomb that week - their first trip to the Winds. Mon and Tue were acclimation hikes. When the forecast for Tue night said very strong cold front, I postponed to go in Thursday instead. It was expected to be single digits up there Wed night. Figured we'd do an easy 12 mile dayhike Wed to Big Sandy Lake.

Road was blocked as soon as we started the climb from the flats. Helped another camper tow a few trees. Then the Forest Service crew got there and we followed them up to the trailhead. Crawled around, over and under deadfall for almost 2 miles before returning. We were the only hikers there, though heard a few made it out later.

Got back in town and found out Pole Creek trail was impassible as was the Green River entrance. No one had any other info so I decided we'd try to go in at Scab Creek, basecamp at Dream Lake and dayhike to Middle Fk basin. Trail wasn't too bad. Still cold Thursday but nothing like Wed. Met a few folks on the way out - mostly in partial shock. Heard SAR pulled one guy out of a tent ripped to shreds at nearby Cross L. He was encrusted in snow and ice but the sleeping bag did it's job.

Went back 2 weeks later. Checked out trails to Big Sandy and Photo Pt. Pole Ck was completely cleared by FS. Big Sandy was only cleared for first 1/2 mile, then just new herd trails, probably some of which my group started.

No downfall on the east side.. .. just the wind. Only got down around 30 at night

Every picture I see of this place just looks so unreal to me! I can't wait to go someday! So beautiful, thank you for sharing!
