Has anyone made the trek to White Pocket from the southern road through Corral Valley and Red Pocket recently? I’ve read a great deal in this forum about how the southern road is much easier and I wanted to pulse check if that is still the case. I have a Subaru Outback with snow tires and I’m thinking of finally making the trek. I intend to pull over and continue on foot for the worst case scenario near Poverty Flats but I had hoped someone could tell me how feasible this is. I hear the roads change a lot seasonally.

The general advice from this forum and Blm : Don’t take AWD into the Sand Hills. You need HC & 4WDR.

I'd go with @Titans advice. I drove the southern route under ideal conditions (early spring when the sand was firmer) in a 4runner and while it wasn't particularly challenging of a drive, I didn't feel like I had a lot of clearance or wheel-power to spare

The intermittent areas of deep sand make even the better 4wDs with high clearance become bogged down at times. There is some pretty bad info on what is okay. We walked cross country, carried enough water for a night and two days. There is a lot of surreal stuff out there that made it very worthwhile and White Pocket is gorgeous. When I picked up a rock to anchor the corner of the ground sheet a rather large green scorpion looked back at me. I immediately missed the tent. Lol The entire rollicking adventure was well worth it though.

I’ve taken small low clearance 2WD and AWD vehicles into many areas but I wouldn’t do it in there. Be very cautious if you do and scout ahead on foot when it looks weird at all.
