Hi,

I think this may have been asked recently, and I may have missed the response.

Regarding the featured photos and captions placed on the website home page, would it be possible for this to be tweaked to show more of the initial photo itself ?

It currently appears that the bottom half of photos are cropped, and a text banner placed to cover a quarter of the remaining image; the combination of which mostly obscures the original photo subject.

Since there are some fantastic photos included in trip reports, it seems a shame to block out parts of these images.

You may have seen my mention of it recently in a thread. It turns out that the featured photos fit perfectly when viewing them on mobile, but they do not fit on the browser. I did tag @Nick in that post but no response yet. I am unsure if there is another person to mention it to.

Something tells me more people here view the site on browser but I am unsure. Not a big deal in the end of course, but it would be a nice aesthetic fix, and would help us better choose which photos we want to be featured.

This is a frustrating issue, sorry I haven't been able to do anything about it. On the last updates we streamlined that system to use the core software rather than third party software that was no longer made or supported. It seems like it should be pretty basic to change the size of that with CSS but even my go-to designer that specializes in this software couldn't pull it off. I just switched it to a different option that makes some of the photos look good but the top one still crops weird. Let me know what you guys think of that option, assuming I can get that crop issue fixed.

Thanks Nick. I actually much prefer the layout you just changed it to, it is visually pleasing and lets you glance a lot of new reports at once. However, my one fear is that it also crowds out the actual forum. I am no designer and cannot say whether or not this would be a serious issue for attracting newcomers, perhaps others will chime in.

i also should state that any complaints I may have about this in no way deter me from visiting. I much prefer forums to any other form of internet communication and my main motivator for reporting issues on forums that I frequent is in the spirit of ensuring the place is welcoming and eye catching for newcomers as forums are certainly a dying breed that I do not wish to see go away entirely.

I like the new scheme with the 5 most recent trip reports. None of the photos appear weirdly cropped on my laptop. Any chance of adding back a link at the bottom of the box to "all featured content"? That would make it easy to see all of the previous reports as well.
