Hello, all. I guess I need to start with a true confession: I haven't done a whole lot outdoorsy, I've spent much more of my life at sea in the Navy and Merchant Marine. Now, I have made one trip to Yellowstone...car camping (please forgive!). My dad (79 years old at the time of our trip) had always wanted to go camping in Yellowstone, and so I made reservations at the Canyon campground a week after the season opened. We arrived in a drizzling rain, snow still on the ground, and just barely managed to get our tent set up before full darkness fell. Well, the rain and the cold continued, and we stuck it out for two nights of a planned three, but then on that second morning we looked at each other, said, "Aren't hotels wonderful?" and left for the Izaak Walton just outside the fence line of Glacier.
Anyhow, that's a long and roundabout way to say that my ulterior motive in coming here was to try to pick up some background material for a story which I'm working on; I'm planning to have two ladies hike the Thorofare...in July, 1974. Yes, they're time travelers; actually, one is an angelic being and the other is Someone even higher. But, while they're here, doing this, it has to be done strictly under human limitations, and when the junior one doesn't take her senior's advice about breaking in her brand-new boots and buying woolen clothing ('but it's scratchy!')...well, some amusement ensues.
I do hope that the moderators will permit this use of the community; I won't be directly using any photos or other material uploaded here save to familiarize myself with the route and to generate my own written descriptions, and to paraphrase any funny anecdotes which are too good to pass up.
In the meantime, here is me at the Canyon campground on June 13th of 2011...and my Dad at the geysers the next day. Rest in Peace, daddy.
