Area: Yunnan, China (Haba & Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Range)
Total Distance: ~16 miles (High Road to Middle Gorge)
Type: Point-to-Point / Thru-hike

Pre-Trip Planning & Logistics
Before hitting the trail, some logistics are key. Most hikers base out of Lijiang or Shangri-La.

Route Strategy: We opted for the classic 2-day, 1-night high-line traverse.

  • Day 1: Start at Naxi Family GH -> 28 Bends -> Teahouse -> Halfway House (Overnight).
  • Day 2: Halfway House -> Tina’s GH -> Descent to Middle Gorge (Tina's to the river bed and back) -> Shuttle out.
  • Permits/Fees: There’s a standard entry fee for the scenic area (approx. 45 CNY). No special backcountry permits are required for the high road itself.

Gear & Clothing System

Since the elevation ranges from 5,900ft to over 8,500ft, the microclimate can shift rapidly. Here’s what I packed:

  • Footwear: Trail Runners with aggressive lugs. You don't necessarily need stiff boots, but you need traction for the loose scree on the 28 Bends and the slippery rocks near the river4.jpg
  • Clothing Layering: * Base: Synthetic moisture-wicking tee.
  • Mid: A lightweight fleece or sun hoodie (the UV at high altitude is brutal).
  • Outer: A hardshell or windbreaker. Even in the sun, the wind ripping through the gorge can get chilly quickly.
  • The Essentials: Trekking poles (your knees will thank you on the descent to the river), a 20-30L daypack, and a headlamp (just in case you arrive at the guesthouse late).

The Trekking Experience

  • The Ascent: The infamous 28 Bends is a relentless series of switchbacks. As you can see , catching the "Alpenglow" on the Jade Dragon peaks makes every drop of sweat worth it.

  • The Exposure: The trail is literally carved into the limestone cliffs . There are sections with 3,000ft straight drops. Not for the faint of heart.

  • The Trail Kings: Don't be surprised if you have to yield the right-of-way. We ran into these local residents—mountain goats navigating the vertical crags with zero effort. They were far more graceful than I was on the 3,000ft exposure.

  • The River Bed: We finished by descending to the Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge. Standing near the "Tiger Leaping Rock" , the power of the water is terrifying. The roar is deafening.

Final Thoughts

Standing on the edge of one of the deepest canyons on earth , really puts things into perspective. It’s a world-class mix of high-alpine scenery and raw river power.
