The Hierarchy of Camping

LOL. They had to have put the Bear Grylls part in just to rile people up, right? If not, I'm afraid Semi-Rad needs to go under the glampers. Oh, and I feel there needs to be a spot for 'Car campers who don't need a damn tent'.

Jedediah Smith, Jim Bridger, John Colter, and all the other trappers of the early 1800's are at the top. Running around the Rockies, Sierras, Cascades, etc., being chased, marauded and killed by natives; riding/walking over snowed-in mountain passes in winter, nearly constantly on the move, setting traps in half-frozen streams, hauling skins around, scouting unknown country, searching high and low for good trapping areas, and generally busting their arses to live the freest lifestyle imaginable.

Bear Girlie (and I) would be dead in a few weeks attempting what those guys did.

Ha! Somehow I have evolved from being near the top of the list, to the car camper with a standup tent. Must be the aging factor......and the fact that I like a good fire, good food, a cocktail or 2, and a good nights sleep. Especially after a big day hike in the general camping area.
Oh well...Backpacking has mostly slipped out of my life. Seems though...I still get to see a lot of good stuff.
How about a spot for camping on a pontoon boat?

Ha! Ya know, it sounds less rugged than car camping, but I'd rank it above it. To me it has some of the wilderness feel of backpacking mixed with the luxuriousness of car camping. No roads or trails, good solitude when done right and plenty of opportunities for things to go very wrong.

I was actually thinking of a trip we did at Hog Park Res up in Wyoming years ago. My friends pontoon boat put us across the lake at a perfect campsite all by ourselves. Considering how busy the place can get, it was nice to have that whole part of the lake to ourselves. We've also used canoes at Trappers Lake in the Flattops Wilderness to get epic campsites too.
I'm definitely envious of how well you duck into nice lonely places in Powell. Make sure you carry some paddles, just in case:rolleyes:.

And the MTN Men didn't have gas stoves, cushy backpacks, down bags, etc, etc........

fun stuff. As a noob I was quite relieved to see that I am already half way up the scale of scoff. :)

I'm the car camper with a tent I can stand in when I'm with the family and backpacker when I'm with my friends. Can't foresee the family moving up the pyramid of scoff, so I make it as comfortable as the cargo space in my car will allow.
