Has anyone backpacked up to and camped on Teton Canyon Shelf? NOT Death Canyon Shelf in GTNP, but Teton Canyon Shelf on the Targhee National Forest. From what i've read and seen from aerial photos, it looks like a great basecamp destination. Anyone have any beta for me??

Not sure where exactly you want......Teton Canyon is long. A little more specifics... In the resource section I have two gpx files of Teton hikes, one I did from Yelowstone NP to Teton Pass and came across there, the other the old Petzholt Highline trail route. Some info you are looking for may be there.

my plan is to hike in via Teton Canyon and up Devils Stairs and spend a couple of nights camped on the shelf, just wondering what the campsite potential is on the shelf

Never been down to Devils Stairs. Google Earth, it looks wide open, water would be the if, but I'd guess there are a few springs like on Death Canyon Shelf, same rock formation. It's all National Forest so you can camp generally anywhere. May call the USFS District that covers it and ask. Basin lakes in Alaska Basin is a great place to camp however. Can day hike GTNP from there. Just hang you smellables as bears are around.

Its pretty. Plenty of places to camp. Not sure what your agenda is, but its certainly a fantastic spot. Probably wont see very many people, most will just go to the basin. Personally, I would go north if you want something remote and truly awesome. The area and peaks just south of Moose Basin is the most rugged, most wild place in that stretch of mountains. And there are no people there.
