Anyone every backpacked Stevens Canyon in Escalante? I've read about it in guidebooks but haven't seen a lot otherwise. Worthy of a 4-day trip? Any recommended routes?
Cool! What route are you thinking of doing? Just in/out Crack and explore up as far as you feel like? I'm actually thinking of doing it the weekend before you. I actually think the soft sand of the exit dune would feel pretty good climbing in and out of with my knee.
I've only explored up from the bottom for a short distance. From what I've read it sounds like a great remote canyon. I've always wanted to hike the whole thing and then exit via the ramp near the top and follow the top of the fold a ways before descending to near Halls Narrows area. Someday.
Steve Allen's Canyoneering 3 book has a 5-7 day backpacking route that goes up Stevens Canyon. The loop is not very easy. I am looking at doing a variation of the loop in Mid April. During my research I ran across this trip report. For my variation to work I need to be able to go down Fold Canyon to the Escalate river, thereby bypassing a 5.0 down climb. If anyone has beta on Fold canyon it would be much appreciated.
Steven's has been on my Radar for a long time. Unfortunately I might not be able to make time for it until June. I'll hopefully do it then, with the connection and point to point of Hall's Creek Narrows. We'll see....
