I went for a moderate snowshoe trip on 11/29 on the Continental Divide Trail out of Elliston, MT, a one-bar, one-post-office town just west of Helena. Much of the beginning of the trail that I took is a Forest Service road that takes off from a gate near the top of Hahn Creek. Actually, a lot of the CDT Trail is FS roads, and the road I took is closed most of the year. We got a little more snow since my last report. It got a little too warm in the afternoon, just before I got back. It's a pain when the snow sticks to your shoes!

This is a shot from the road portion looking northwest toward McDonald Pass, which is just west of Helena. Elliston sits at the bottom of the Divide on the west side. The pass is a little to the left of that big open park on the right.

After about 2.25 miles, the road becomes a typical trail. The road portion is rather level, and the trail climbs from the road. The next pic is from a park at the point where the trail descend for a mile or so before climbing. It heads north and intersects McDonald Pass. The pic is the view to the west. This is where I turned back.

This shot looks eastward to the Elkhorn Mountains on the horizon. I think that the mountain left of center is Jericho Mountain.

The next pic documents what all too often seems like sport for some folks: shooting trail signs. This marker is on the trail portion of my trip and happens to be at an intersection that can be confusing to those who haven't been here before. Fortunately, some kind soul marked the way with a black ink marker.

Anyway, we got about a foot of snow in the mountains on Wednesday, so I plan to take another trip tomorrow (Sunday). It'll be a little warmer west of the Divide, so I'll head that way.
