Hi:

I am new to this forum. I have a few rookie questions. I am trying to gear up for the Pacific Crest trail. Maybe meet some people who might want to group up next year.

I am a rookie. But an experienced tennis shoe and backpack Rucker. I have done well on cheap grab what you can options sticking close to towns. I can Ruck 50lbs 25 miles in a day . . . At least that is what my iPhone says. :) I was actually homeless for a while.

Some basic questions:

Socks:

1. For professional hiking like the Crest do you use Wool socks? If so are they hot?

2. What is the deal with sock liners? Do you use them?

3. When buying boots do you accommodate the size up for the socks? How much? Would you run on them in the gym to break them in?

I am looking at Merrell Moab 3 Mid and Keen Targhe 3 Mid.

4. Any input on those boots?

5. When it says hiking boots . . . I don’t know why but a tactical boot with total ankle coverage comes to mind. Like Garmont. What’s the deal with those? Is it good marketing or are they good?

6. Does the “mid” cover your ankle? How much?

My feet are really really wide. And the bone on the top of my feet is tall. I get unbearable pain on the top bone and the edges of the front of my feet. Any suggestions in terms of a boot or sizing option?

7. On the Crest how long are you in the wilderness / how far between civilization and the ability to charge up?

8. Anyone have an opinion on the Eberlestock Freefall 3000? Will everyone think I am trying to look like some poser commando? It’s a military bag.

9. what is a target gear weight? I don’t have any trouble moving 45-50lbs.

10. How heavy of a jacket do you bring if you are hiking the standard season, which starts in April or May? Do you just throw your heavy jacket away once you hit July? Do you just layer up instead of a heavy jacket?

Any other tips? Introduce yourself if you like! Any answers to any of these questions is appreciated.

10. What would you include in your Ruck?

Many thanks!

I'd go directly to the PCT, AT or CDT forums ......

Yes.... You will probably get better info on the long distance trail forums . Pacific coast trail. Appalachian trail. Continental divide trail... Whiteblaze.net forum. Backpackinglight.com forum. Google will be your friend. Others here may chime in as well here.
