Weather was good, flowers are out. Decided at the last minute to take a 4 day trip. Starting at Darby MT, taking the Magruder Trail to Elk City ID. Then backroads to Kamiah, ID to pick up the Lolo Motorway. The Magruder splits the Frank Church Wilderness, 101 miles. The Lolo Motorway, 90 miles, follows fairly close to the Trail Lewis & Clark blazed out west in 1805. Plenty of flowers, blue sky, few people.
From Nez Pearce pass on the Magruder

Along the Magruder

Hell's Half Acre Lookout

Deep Creek Ranger Station

Burnt Knob Lookout

Near Elk City, ID

Gold Dredge Tailings along the American River

Lookout Butte

On the Lolo Motorway

Rocky Ridge Lake

Wietas Butte Lookout

And "the end of the road" We were following a ATV group who had been sawing out the deadfall along the road. They gave up just past this point. The whole area had a highwind event this spring and the roads have millions of down trees. It ended up the middle 10 miles had not been cut out, sooooo, we had to turn around. Which was sad...... some of the best of the Motorway is the north end.

We ended driving up the Lochsa recreational river corridor on the highway 12, which is very beautiful. Mostly devoid of traffic. Had a good dinner at the Lochsa Lodge and headed home via Lolo, Hamilton, Wisdom and ennis MT. A really long day.
