Praying Mantis from a day hike earlier this week. He jumped off the trail right in front of me, at first I thought it was a grasshopper since I've never seen a praying mantis jump. Luckily it stood still long enough for me to sit down with my camera and stick a lens in its face. Two photos and it was moving deeper into the brush.
I love Praying Mantises
I have them often hang out along the staircase to my apartment

Toads are not reptiles, but a minute before I saw a 4 foot rattlesnake moving into the brush and a minute later...
... I saw this in the middle of the trail
For perspective, note the leaf stem near the body. He was the size of a thick piece of spaghetti or linguini. He wasn't super happy with me leaning over to take some photos because he kept rearing back and acting like he was going to strike. I wasn't that close, these are heavily cropped from a 105mm photo.
