Last week on the 16th of February, I had wanted to hike Red Butte Ridge, but after about 40 minutes of hiking it started to snow heavily, and since I wasn't dressed for much snow, I had to put my tail between my legs and return to my vehicle.

Starting to snow pretty good at this point on the 16th. You can no longer see Red Butte above anymore.

Calling it a day. :(

So today, the 23rd, I headed off to finish what I hadn't completed the previous Sunday.

01.jpg
The west end of Red Butte. I didn't actually come off this side though, as the trail is extremely steep and muddy, and I didn't want
to fall.

Sunrise on Mount Olympus

Intersection of the trail that goes to the Living Room and Mount Wire with the Shoreline Trail

04.jpg
Red Butte above. That is where I'll be leaving the ridge after hiking down to the Living Room from the top

05.jpg
Intersection of the Living Room Trail with the Mount Wire Trail. I'll be heading left through the scrub oak

06.jpg
Pleasant hiking through the scrub. I had it all to myself.

07.jpg
Looking up towards the top of Red Butte. The actual top of the ridge is just out of view though.

08.jpg
I love looking through the trees on this hike.

09.jpg
At the saddle and looking along Red Butte to the west.

10.jpg
Beginning to head west across the ridge

11.jpg
A frozen Red Butte Reservoir below. The Dude Benchmark is way off in the distance.

11b.jpg
Stansbury Island lit up in the distance. This picture didn't do the view justice I'm afraid.

12.jpg
A mountain mahogany, with Mount Wire beyond

13.jpg
No humans had been along the ridge since our last two storms. I was following a deer's
tracks across the ridge.

14.jpg
Some red rock where Red Butte gets its name

15.jpg
Looks like my trail blazing friend the deer was getting something to eat this winter.

I then stopped for a snack, and popped on my Sigma zoom lens to get some shots that I was interested in.

16.jpg
The smokestack to the west in Magna for the Rio Tinto Smelter

18.jpg
Another shot of Mount Olympus to the south

19.jpg
Lone Peak

20.jpg
Summit of Grandeur Peak to the south

21.jpg
Mount Raymond, just over Parleys Ridge in the foreground

Sigma lens with a 1.4X teleconverter
24.jpg
Hard to make out, but the summit of Jack's Mountain

22.jpg
The airplane beacon on Mount Wire

23.jpg
Another mountain mahogany on Red Butte with Salt Lake beyond

And now, back to my regularly scheduled lens. :)
25.jpg
Ridge shot

26.jpg
And a snack to get back down

27.jpg
Some of the red rock of Red Butte. The Dude Benchmark and Black Mountain Ridge are in the distance

28.jpg
Mount Wire. If you look closely, you can make out the old beacon on the summit

30.jpg
A look down into the west end of Red Butte Canyon

29.jpg
This is where I began to descend off the ridge

31.jpg
The west end of Parleys Ridge, with Perkins Peak at the center.

32.jpg
Looking back up, coming off the ridge. My left knee was screaming at me during this decent.

33.jpg
Heading down to the Living Room, with the west end of Red Butte below ( the section of the ridge that I didn't hike due to the steep,
muddy trail coming off of it on the west end.

34.jpg35.jpg
A family was enjoying their lunches at the Living Room as I passed by

36.jpg
This is the view to the south from the Living Room. Not bad!

37.jpg
Looking up at the west side of Mount Wire

38.jpg
The nasty trail that I didn't want to take coming off the west side of the ridge

39.jpg
Back at the Subaru

A view of the north side of Red Butte as I was driving home through the University of Utah's campus.

The End.

Fabulous shots! You had great, grey skies to showcase the contrast. Not sure why any self-respecting deer would be up on that ridge in winter. Would think most of the food would be lower. Speaking of food, I enjoy those fig bars too. Just getting expensive...but what isn't.

Thanks @OldBill. I used a Canon EOS 60D for the shots. I was wondering why the deer headed across the ridge myself. I used to buy those fig bars at Costco in the big box, back when they had three flavors in the box - raspberry, blueberry and the plain fig flavor. When they switched to only two flavors, I started buying multiple 10 count boxes to get a variety of flavors like strawberry, apricot, and the apple cinnamon along with the previously mentioned three flavors.

The End.
Good judgement and some great photos! Thanks

Some nice shots! What brand Teleconverter do you use?

Thanks. It's a Sigma APO Tele Converter 1.4X EX DG. It works fine with the Sigma 100-400mm lens if there is enough light. If not, you must use manual focus, so a few of my shots were a little shaky with the converter and the lens. I should have used my tripod that I took to eliminate the shake, but I just hand held the camera whether there was enough light or not. I only used the tripod for the selfies that I took.
