Hey everyone,

I've got time off in February for a photo trip, was hoping for snow but I seem to be in the wrong part of the country. So far I'm planning on 4 days at the Grand Canyon, South Rim, and was thinking about adding a few extra days in Utah. I'm in the mood for water and reflections (yeah, I know I'm looking in a dry state but UT-AZ is the vicinity)-anything in the Kanab area besides Lake Powell? I see a lake off Johnson Canyon Road-anyone been there, and is it worth it? Is Johnson Canyon Road worth exploring? Other suggestions?

Your water and reflections might be frozen, but that's not so bad. What about heading up to the Bryce area and shooting Willis Creek and the stuff in that area? The Johnson/Skutumpah roads can be pretty nasty when wet or with melting snow though. I drove to Willis in January one year and it was a bit sketchy in the shadowy spots where there was still snow.

Bryce Canyon was my original idea, but I couldn't think of anything original to shoot there after my last trip. I have no idea about Willis Creek so I'll look into it, thanks! The biggest drawback with Bryce is, and I'm not kidding, you can't get a decent cup of coffee there-very important when it's subfreezing! Kanab and Zion both have decent coffee shops.

White Pocket seems to have some good water catching capabilities and reflection potential if you have the wheels to get you there.

I was thinking of that, and there are permits available, but wasn't sure about the vehicle. I have an AWD Escape, and I remember some pretty deep stretches of sand when I went there with a guide 4 years ago. The Escape handled the sand on the way to Water Canyon easily, but those stretches were short. Maybe frozen sand will be easier?

No permit is needed for White Pocket

Hmmm, I did White Pocket and CBS the same day so I must have assumed the permit was required for both. You've been on Johnson Canyon Rd-is it picture worthy? Ever been to the lake about a mile and a half off the road?

Johnson Canyon Road is mostly private property....I don't recall anything very picture worthy. Never seen the lake.
