Well, we continued our foothill follies this weekend with a short hike up Pencil Peak which is a subpeak of Parley's Ridge. The forecast called for about a 50% chance of rain, but mostly in the afternoon. Unfortunately, we caught some of it in the morning with a drizzle on the way up, another drizzle on the summit, and then we really caught it on our way back to the trailhead for about ten minutes of downpour and ferocious winds. I hauled my Canon EOS 5D Mark II with me, but about halfway up Pencil Point the battery went kaput on me, so the rest of the shots from that time on were taken by the Canon PowerShot SX530 HS.

Pencil Point hike overview map

We'll be taking the Shoreline trail towards Parley's Point

Evening primrose

Honeysuckle

A look up at the false summit of Jack's Moountain, where we were last weekend.

Phlox

Ballhead waterleaf

A ladybug trying to hide from me

Utah milkvetch

Common Storksbill

My hiking partners - looks like storm clouds moving in

Rose bushes

Utah service berries

Desert assylum

Waiting for a couple of slowpokes

Breaking off of the Parley's Point Trail and beginning our climb up to the top of Pencil Point

Still waiting for slowpokes

To hell with them, I'm heading to the top

Doing my best to catch her

Mount Olympus to the south

Interesting, someone had placed a deer vertebrae on a branch of scrub oak

Bastard toadflax

Arrowleafed balsamroot - In better shape than the arrowleaf we saw on Jack's Mountain the previous Saturday

There's the second slowpoke

And look who's waiting up top for us

A look up to the east at the top of Parley's Ridge

Summit of Grandeur Peak shows itself above Parley's Ridge

Sheila makes it to the top

Low cryptantha

Summit shot. It's getting ready to start drizzling on us and the wind is also picking up

BCP greetings before heading back down

Heading down

Going to head straight out the ridge ahead and join up with the BST

I liked the looks of this Juniper

More bastard toadflax

Showing off with Pencil Point

View up an unnamed canyon off of Parley's Ridge

Switchbacks below that lead back to the trailhead

A sleepy duskywing butterfly

Pencil Point with Jack's Mountain above and to the left

Falling behind again. This shot was taken just before the deluge started

Storm clouds approaching

Shot of Jack's Mountain with dark clouds beyond

Looking up at Pencil Point from the northwest

Yellows salsify

Almost back at the Sube.

After our hike, we went home and changed out of our wet clothes, washed up then headed out for our every other month Beer
Night with friends, coworkers and retirees. This month's gathering place was the Bohemian Brewery

Bavarian pretzel for and appetizer.

For the main course, I had the Schweinshaxen which consisted of a pork shank, red cabbage and of course some spätzle. I know
your mouth is watering @Ugly.

And to wash it all down with a Dortmunder Export lager.
Well, my foothill hiking is almost complete and the knee has held up reasonably well I think. I will be doing one more foothill hike in a couple of weeks to check out some old limekilns and Dry Canyon before heading off to give some blood. After that, I'll be attempting Perkins Peak on Parleys Ridge which has some slight scrambling to it and with the increased distance, should give my knee its next test.
The End.
