Does anyone know of any backpacking trips around the Paradox, CO area? I was wondering if there are any loops or out and backs that go to the Dolores river. Can anyone recommend anything?

When I worked for the Colorado Environmental Coalition years ago...now Conservation Colorado...I did a lot of mapping and hikes in that area. Sewemup Mesa is a gem, not many trails in that region though. Maverick Canyon has a cool arch, and its really nice in the fall when the cottonwoods are turning. This would make for a good backpack trip, but not a loop. On the other side of the river there are countless opportunities for getting away in the backcountry on the Uncompahgre Plateau and the Unaweep. Granite Creek is another good one to explore.
There is an effort underway to designate a big part of this region as a National Conservation Area. Not sure what they did to all the detailed maps I made for these places back then, but here's an overview of some big roadless areas over there...
