Hey everyone. As I said I'm new to backpacking and this forum. My idea is mental clarity. Here are my thoughts so far for your amusement.

In the beginning:
I remember my dad taking me out camping. Packing everything we needed and then some. We would be gone for a week and there was enough stuff for two weeks. So I thought as a kid. So when I started this idea my memory of my dad popped in and said "yeah, you know what that's a good idea!" Bought myself a 75 liter bag filled it with a tent which is a miniaturized display model that I had when I was a kid. Old Coleman flannel cotton sleeping bag. REI 3.5 self inflating camp bed. ISO propane stove. Backpacking pot set. A Gerber spade, and 36" splitting axe. 200' of poly rope. 5lbs of oatmeal. 2 gallon equivalent of powdered milk. A jar of peanut butter. Ratcheting tie straps and Finley platypus 2 liter hydration pack. And a folding camping chair. All on a SOG 35liter pack made out of fake kevlar. Final weigh in: 72 lbs. And I didn't even have everything I thought I needed.

Now (few weeks later)
my pack is now a Teton sports 65 liter. (Cheap Amazon bag)
Tent is a REI quarter dome 3 person
Sleeping bag is a marmot 11 synthetic.
Big agnus Q-core
Stove is now a MSR international.
Same pot set (wanting to upgrade)
Food is now all dehydrated veggies and meets with rice made by yours truly (still figuring out the dehydrator most are experiments) and also about 10 scoops of protein powder.
Currently dropped the platapus for my hydro flask 40oz
Leatherman super tool
REI backpacking chair
200' poly rope
Bible (nasb)
Journal (including pen)
Black diamond headlamp
Flask (J.B.)
Few grams and zig zags
Sewing kit
Duct tape
(Have not weighed yet)

Still wanting:
Water purification. Which I'm looking at platapus gravity works so I can double it as a camping shower bag.
Toiletries (figuring out storage and containers)
Hammock rain fly and bug net.
Open to other suggestions.

The more miles I hike the lighter my pack gets.

Suggestions:
Get a bible app for your phone
Type journal notes on your phone
Ditch the rope and use para cord in your boots if you are concerned with rope
Leatherman squirt
Ditch the chair and sit on a log or rock
I Love the MSR Int. white gas stoves. They are great especially in crappy weather and winter. However, a canister stove is cheap and light. You may want to add a canister stove to your gear so you can pick. I use an Optimus crux, aluminum cup, and titanium spork when weight really matters. ALOCS has a lot of cheap cooking stuff that is ok quality.

You didn't mention clothing. You may want a down vest, hat, silicone fingered gloves, and rain pants and rain jacket. You will need a good rain jacket. REI stuff is really cheap if you get it used. I also like the Marmot Precip line. I use a steripen and pre filter for water. Most people use pumps or gravity filters.

I also take a small battery pack to charge my phone, steripen, and headlamp.

I use my iPhone for pictures, weather, and a GPS app, lantern, and so on...It's probably my single biggest asset. Verizon is the best carrier for back country phone calls.

Over time you may want to upgrade or add to your current gear. A down sleeping bag is something you may want to add. For winter you could use both the down and synth. Also, an upgrade to a Gregory or Osprey pack would be the perfect Christmas present to yourself in a year or two.

As for storage, just put everything in a zip lock bags. If it's going to rain a lot, line your pack with a garbage bag. Also a paint drop cloth is light and cheap for a tent footprint. Tyvek is preferred but I can't find it as easy in small sections for some reason. Gear tape works better for tents and jackets as it will hold better and won't ruin the fabric.

Just some ideas...

As pstm13 said: use your phone to it's full capacity, and make sure you can keep it powered. There are long articles of backcountry related phone stuff floating around the Internet. AdventureAlan has one of the most in-depth studies.
