Got my new backpack today, Gregory Contour 60. Now i get to go home and pack it with a bunch of stuff and strut around the house while my wife calls me a dork...and then get depressed that my planned trips are still a couple months away.

I've never gone backpacking in southern Utah yet. what would you suggest for a first time trip maybe a 2 or 3 day trip i could take my 12 year old son on with me?

In March I'd head to the lowest elevations I could find.

The Maidenwater/Trail loop would be a good overnighter so long as it's reasonable warm in the day (there is a bit of wading).

Tons of options in The Needles district of Canyonlands. Chesler Park, etc...

Capitol Reef has many good options. Spring Canyon, the Muley Twists, etc.

Anything toward the end of Hole-in-the-Rock Road would be excellent like Coyote Gulch, Willow, Fiftymile or Davis.

Even something as high as the Escalante River Gorge can be great but ice on the shady bends may still be present. Good for an overnighter though.

Awesome, thank you!
If I go I'll be sure to let you all know what we did and take photos.

Looking at the Canyonlands/Needles area and came across this:
New Human Waste Disposal Policy
Effective September 22, 2013, people camping at sites in Chesler Park, Elephant Canyon and at Peekaboo will be required to pack out their human waste. View the news release announcing this change.

I don't have experience taking a dump in a bag, and hauling it around with me. how about any of you...or am i alone in this?

It's not that bad. I've done it backpacking the Zion Narrows, floating the Green and car camping in the Maze (although we had a bucket to leave it in there). Doesn't hurt to have a couple of gallon zip locks to double/triple seal it though as the odor can tend to seep out. Wag Bags or Restop bags have been good.

I've done it in Paria and buckskin. Restops are great as long as you are careful and seal them up good.
