I decided I had to take advantage of the fact that I have time off around the holidays and get out somewhere, even if the highs aren't breaking the freezing point these days. A friend and I headed off to explore a jumble of rocks to the east as you descend into Estes Park, CO from highway 36 from Lyons. I figure if I see a summit enough times then I should figure out a way up.

In the summer the route up is simple and there's even a road halfway up (possibly private), but we just parked the car on a bend in the road off highway 34 to Loveland and headed up. The snow got deep in spots but we didn't use snowshoes or microspikes.

On the way back down 36 we found a bend in the road that looked like an interesting rocky canyon with no formal trail. We hopped the guard rail and headed back to find a nice little side stream with some interesting rock outcroppings to scramble up.

All in all it was a good day out in the cold.

This is my 1st trip report, maybe of many. I figure it's the 1st of the year and I could squeeze in a resolution to start contributing some trip reports instead of always spying on everyone else and living vicariously through them.

Well done and way to get out there.

I can't remember. We're usually out of here around the holidays. I think El Nino has the snow numbers up higher than normal around here and in most places. Plus the frigid temps means it isn't going anywhere...
