On one of our first trips to Grand Gulch, we pulled into the Collins Spring trailhead to begin a hike to Kane Gulch. There was one truck there, and this lady walked over to us and said she was glad to see us. She said her battery was dead and she had been there about a day waiting to see if someone might show up. She was ready to hike out and hitch a ride to the Kane Gulch Ranger Station (trailer). She said her name was Jean Akens. We let her take my fathers beat up Volvo wagon back to the ranger station, thereby saving some bucks on the ranger shuttling our car back to the trailer. I don't think they do that anymore. When we made it to Kane Gulch this book and note were in our car. She has written a few more books over the years.
