I just need to rant a little

So my wife alene and her sister pinecone headed out of town this weekend for a two night trip to Canyonlands NP (Needles) and I was going to stay back and hang out with our little kids (1 & 4). I received a phone call from a friend in the neighborhood who also is a boy scout leader for a group of 11 year olds. He was looking for a second adult to come along per scout rules, plus he needed a truck to haul all of their gear in too :). I balked for a few days, but ultimately decided I would go since it would just be Friday night and the weather has been decent.

Since we are in the SLC area we were looking for something relatively short and quick. As a teenager he said he used to camp up a canyon near Grantsville, so we headed West out to Grantsville, then south toward grantsville reservoir to a road called North Willow. We followed that road about 8 miles or so and settled in a small opening off the road and here is where my rant starts.

What is it going to take to get the rednecks to stop trashing our land???? The entire place was either torn up with ATV/4x4 tire marks, or it was littered with literally hundreds of thousands of bullet casings, shotgun shells, broken glass, tin cans, etc. This canyon was actually very nice and I was told if you follow it further it leads to some nice hiking up into the mountains, but it will forever be damaged by the dumb-asses that can't rub two sticks together to figure out how they're trashing the place.

It really saddens me and I don't have a solution in my mind to resolve it. On another level, I myself am a gun owner and will on occasion take it out to shoot, but I'm always careful to pick up my spent shells and any trace that I was shooting. I realize I'm not entirely blameless in some regard where I too could be doing some damage to the area, but I at least make an effort to clean up after myself.

Noticing how destroyed the area was, we took it advantage of teaching the boys the "leave the place cleaner than you found it" mentality, but we ran out of bags to put trash in and it still didn't look like we had made a dent in the place.
