Hey nerds and book lovers, I'm currently reading "Beyond the Hundredth Meridian" Powell and the Grand Canyon and the American West and I realized that my knowledge of the history of the Southwest is lacking. So, I'm looking to learn a little bit more about the exploration/discovery of the American Southwest, ideally a book that covers the Spanish explorers as well as American. Basically, I'd like one book (if it exists) that goes from searching for El Dorado to Powell and the Grand Canyon.

I'd also like a good book about the French voyageurs in the Mississippi and Missouri Valleys and into the Canadian west.

I don't mind academic books with lots of footnotes/endnotes, but a more popular style book is good also. And if there isn't one book that covers this whole time period, I'm happy to entertain recommendations for narrower times or specific people.

So any recommendations?

Clarence Dutton for geology, and "Mormon Country" by Wallace Stegner is a good book about Mormonia (as my Utah State prof called it) - not really SW history, but helps fill in the blanks. "One Man's West" by David Lavender helps fill in the SW Colorado and E. Utah gaps. I think a lot of what you're looking for could be found in the rare books sections of bookstores.

"The Adventures of Captain Bonneville" by Washington Irving --- more to the north but touches on the SW

"A Land So Strange - The Epic Journey of Cabeza de Vaca" by Andres Resendez

Appreciate the suggestions.

So, there is no obvious book that captures this history? I guess that's why nothing popped up on Amazon when I was searching.

Let's narrow it down, any recommended books about the later explorers/mountain men/scouts like Kit Carson and his time period?
