I'm a lifelong backpacker, geologist, and traveler. I retired to a place up the South Fork of the Shoshone River from Cody, WY. This summer I find myself alone because my wife is away caring for her 95 year old Dad. So I want to get out and backpack. Target areas are Thorofare and Kirwin areas.
I've hiked the whole AT, and parts of the PCT and CDT, plus two long trips in Nepal, and geologic work in Alaska and Africa. I don't like going out alone, but it wouldn't be the first time. I've hiked alone the length of the Bob Marshall and Scapegoat wildernesses in MT, and many hiking and climbing trips to Glacier NP. I also worked geology in the Beartooths, and my PhD geology field area was grizzly habitat on the Continental Divide west of Helena, MT. So hiking in grizzly country is not new to me. Even in those places I rarely saw sign of any, and never had any problems with them. I think a lot of the fear of bears is overblown.
I'm turning 70 this summer, but I'm still in decent shape. Just bought a new backpack (Kifaru) and tent (Samaya). Yes, high dollar stuff, but I got it on year-end sale so not so bad.
Anyway, greetings to all, and maybe I'll see you on the trail!
