If this is crazy let me know. Thinking about removing the insulation from the bottom of my bag. Why? I understand that it gets compressed rendering it useless, becoming unneeded bulk and weight. I don't have money for a quilt but have access to a sewing machine to patch it up. Essentially a free weight and bulk reduction.

Worth it or no?

I sleep with all of my bags like quilts. I never zip them up. I don't think it would be worth it to save a couple of ounces to remove insulation.

x2

With one exception.
The only time I get in and zip mine up is when it starts to get pretty well below freezing.

The foot box insulation in mine doesn't get compressed, so I would never remove the insulation. However, that may be because I'm 5'7" and the bag is 6' long. One of the few times it's nice being short.

I could maybe understand removing insulation from the hood/removing the hood for comfort reasons if you were trying to get it more like a quilt. However, in spite of the fact that I don't use it very often, I like to have the hood option in case the temperature drops lower than I expected.

The down insulation is probably the least worthwhile thing to remove, weight-wise. If you want to save weight, best to get rid of the zipper and essentially create your own homemade quilt.

That said, Big Agnes sells basically what you're proposing to do. It's a standard mummy, but they don't put any insulation underneath you.
