I'm strictly a spinning reel and night crawler kinda guy. Never fly fished. What kind of gear are you guys using when backpacking ? What lures? Are those retractable pocket fishing rods any good?

I'm guessing trout is the main fish in western streams? To be 100% honest my wife if the fisherman in the family, she out catches me every time.

I use a small/cheap/light spin cast reel and a simple rod that come apart into 2 pieces.
Bait, I use the Jakes gold domino looking lure and I'll bring a couple flies and use them with a bobber.
these limit me to just fishing in lakes though.
One of these years I'll get a fly rod n reel.

Cabella's collapsible rod, Shinamo UXL. Pocket collapsible are good for casting about 10', I cast out to around 300'. I use almost exclusively Jake's Money Clips with mepps, panthers and a super dupers thrown in. A few flies behind a bubble sometimes. Trout, whitefish and some graylings in high mtn streams and lakes.

Most of the time I outfish everyone with flyrods.....

And yes, trout is the main thing you'll catch...at least in idaho and utah. Brook, cutthroat, rainbow, and the occasional tiger or golden...maybe a grayling in some lakes.

Do you not use any weights and just let the lures float naturally? Or do you put on a few split shot and just cast and reel until something hits?

The Jake's lure has plenty of weight by itself.
And with a fly/bubble it also doesn't need a weight. The bobber is its weight.

I just bought a fenwick four piece that I love as my spinning rod for my fly rod I have a four piece cabelas brand 3 weight that I like as well.

I like my Shakespeare Ugly Stick UL pack rod a lot. The small Bass Pro UL reel I use with it gets the job done, though I'd prefer something with a better anti-reverse. I don't fish often enough to put much thought into until I'm actually using the reel. But its the rod that does most of the work.
