Fall in Zion

Wow. 100 foot fall and there wasn't even a rope mishap involved to slow him down and yet he survived and waited what sounds like at least 15 hours or more to be extracted. Insane. Hope he recovers.

Wow. I too will keep my fingers crossed-he's already insanely lucky just to have survived.

He's fortunate. There have been, what seems like, more accidents than usual this year in Zion. Maybe people are just reporting more to the news or something. So far I haven't heard of one accident that was NOT preventable. I do hope he recovers and that all is well but it seems like the trip leadership during any one of these accidents was lacking.
Now, I am planning the annual family canyoneering octoberfest this year and I hope I've planned everything accordingly. I do hate murphy's law.
Back to sensitivity...I hope he's ok.

I think in general the number of Search and Rescue has gone up and you're definitely right, most - if not all - have been preventable.

Agreed, it's definitely going up. I think it's largely to do with the rapidly growing popularity of canyoneering and the perception of Zion being sort of an amusement park of canyons. More people getting into it without enough respect for the consequences and without enough experience to be out leading routes.

I just found out that my brother-in-law was leading the group when this Behunin fall occurred and that the victim is a good friend of him and my sister. Apparently the guy is still in really bad shape.
