Does anyone know whether the cottonwoods are turning in the Escalante area yet? Or anywhere in Southern Utah for that matter? I realize it may be a little early, but I've got a 4 day weekend coming up and I'd love to go somewhere with some fall color.

I was in Escalante for a few days last week. As Nick says, it's still a little early for the cottonwoods but the Aspens on Boulder Mountain were looking mighty fine.

I'll try to post a few pics if this rubbish hotel wifi will cooperate...

Thanks for letting me know! It doesn't look very hopeful for this weekend. I'll have to try and get out for a shorter trip when the colors are popping.:)

Heading to Zion in a week and a half. Anyone know how the colors are in Kolob Canyon and Zion? Anything left on Boulder Mountain by chance? It's been an extended color year in the Eastern Sierra so wondering if Utah is the same way. Thanks!

I saw a post from a Facebook friend yesterday and the color in Zion Canyon is just starting to change. I'm not sure about Kolob Canyon or Boulder Mtn.

It's been a long color season, but the results have been mixed. A lot of aspens dropped their leaves this year due to a fungus that was caused by the extremely wet spring we had. Where there were leaves they were good though. Hopefully the cottonwoods will fare better.

We'll find out soon enough! :)

The cottonwoods on this part of the Colorado Plateau (western Colorado) have also been hit or miss so far. There's been some pretty bad displays of color in areas that are typically pretty nice.
That's unfortunate. Fall color really is different every year. Usually when the displays aren't great I try to focus on the smaller details. It sure is disappointing though. Especially when you travel for it.

yeah, except the cottonwoods seem to have the black spotted leaves that the aspen trees with the fungus did.
