First of all I'd like to thank everybody for their suggestions on my last minute trip last week. I decided upon the escalante area and more specifically death hollow. The hike definitely left me wanting to experience more desert stuff. I liked this trip as a good introduction to southern Utah landscapes because it was along water the whole time and I fear not being able to find water on backpacking trips lol.

My buddy got off work and we hit the road from salt lake about 1 pm got to the trailhead and started on our way. After looking over the trail I left my hiking boots in the car cause I figured they would be useless with all the river crossings in front of us. I just hiked in crocs which I have done before in hawaii when my boots where wet but I probably wont do that ever again just cause of the wet sand getting in them and screwing up my feet. Some pics of the way in...

We didn't quite make it all the way to the confluence before dark but kept pushing the little extra amount. I was too lazy to take my pack off and access my headlamp so of course this made us lose the trail and therefore we just walked up the creek and of course the water level started rising and I found a good hole to step in and fall in just before camp. Got to camp got off the wet cloths cooked some dinner and pitched camp dranka beer or two and got some shut eye. Next time I will be getting out my headlamp. So on our last two trips my buddy has been bringing a solo tent rather than sharing a two man with me. I have a good 2 man tent but I dont wanna haul that for just me so I do have a one man wal mart tent yes I said wal mart tent but its kinda cool cause I figured I could just use my trekking poles instead of the tent poles and I was eager to field test this.. I was right its super light with just the fabric however Ive only ever brought it in solo trips in nice weather since it was like 30 bones i do worry about it standing up in weather or heavy rains of the uintas. Beacuase my budddy is going the one man backpack tent route and I go with him at least ten times a year and even though this was cheap and effective I found it extremely uncofortable and damn near impossible for my 6'4" frame to climb in and out of. Not to mention the amont of condensation with it being single walled. Therefore I just used my rei memeber coupon to order the copper spur ul1 Im kinda excited.. Anyways heres a picture of the wal mart tent set up with the trekking poles this might work for the cheap casual minimalist with a smaller body than me....

The next morning I cooked some grits and coffee on my new homemade alcohol stove out of an 8.5 oz coke aluminum bottle that I was eager to try and then headed up death hollow doing what I do ;) some fishing.

After a nap and some lunch back at camp we got the urge to hike for a good view to enjoy some more beer at..

We were considering gambling and doing a day hike in boulder mountain on the way out but y feet were hacked and plus we wanted to get out and meet my buddies wife and her friends for dinner in heber. After getting home and looking at snow data on google earth my suspicions were correct and we coulda got up there.. oh well maybe next week ;) The motivation for good grub may have caused my buddy to speed and we got pulled over. Overall a fun trip I need to reconsider the footwear perhaps neopreen dive booties with old sneakers or somthing??! My second mistake was one i knew better but I wasnt paying attention I had a leather belt on which equivilated to bad pack rash which I never get without the leather belt.... My new pack felt so comfortable on that I know it had to be the stupid leather belt

Nice TR! That's a bigger trout (brown?) than I'd expect out of there. Sweet!

Yes brown and one thing ive learned is to never be surprised what secrets small creeks can hide :)

So where did you go in? doesn't quite look like the main Death Hollow Canyon near Escalante...

Nice fish too.

Great trip and pics. How far up Death Hollow did you go? What snow data can you get on Google Earth?

I camped at the bottom and just day trekked it up from there fishing along the way so it's tough to to say but maybe be a couple miles. And Google earth you can get overlays with snow depth melt rate water equivalent etc. I find them really useful planning my hikes. Here's a link to the Google earth overlays from the noaa.

Nice bscuderi! That is a terrific way to look at real-time snow pack/coverage. Great find.
