I loved my GoreTex trail runners when I lived in the desert because they kept most of that awful and stupid sand out.
I usually tried to avoid trails with sand because I couldn't walk well on sand because that uneven sand always hurt my knee.
I had good overall experiences with my La Sportiva Wildcat GTX and La Sportiva Ultraraptor GTX

Thanks for the tip on the REI ones. I shred any of the spandex ones quickly if any scrambling is involved. I've been using a pair of Ultimate Direction FK gaiters, which have bomber material but their construction suffers from major quality issues. I had to modify and repair them from day 1. I may repurpose the fabric from some old Schoeller climbing pants into a new set of gaiters.
