I'm going with my cousin (her first time backpacking) to Escalante in a week, and she's having some foot issues and doesn't know how far she can go with a loaded pack. Our plan is to start at Hurricane Wash and camp the first night at the confluence with Coyote Gulch. I'm going to carry as much extra weight as I can, but if she's having a hard time is there a place to camp along Hurricane Wash before the confluence? I've looked on google earth but can't tell. If we did that, I would go to the confluence to get water and bring it back.

There are plenty of places to setup along Hurricane wash but they will likely be all dry. There should be water at the confluence and throughout the gulch. I use aquamira to treat water instead of using a filter. Escalante water is often is very silty and will completely clog a filter in no time. I had a Katadyn hiker pro completely blow up in my hand in Escalante. Grab some alum from the cooking aisle. Its great at settling the water and getting the silt to sit at the bottom quickly. Then scoop out (slowly) some clean water into your bottle and treat.

Helpful info - thanks. I'm planning to use a collapsible bucket and alum to settle the silt pre-filtering. I've also got Micropur tablets and a Steripen. So I'm hoping that between all of these we'll be ok!

I put in a call to the Escalante visitor center to ask about conditions, and hopefully they'll get back to me soon...

Not sure if you have this already, but here's the full NOAA forcast for Coyote Gulch.
