I am thinking of taking my annual June backpacking trip out west this year (I usually backpack in the southeast). I am looking at the CT in SD and have ordered the guidebook. I am looking for general advice on weather in early June (yes, I know this is tough but in general), water supply issues (if any) and shuttle services. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

sounds like a great time. i think water will likely be scarce on the trail. there will probably be no water in wind cave until you get to highland creek. same for custer until french creek. after pactola i would expect water to become rather scarce. the black hills are "only" under moderate drought (https://www.drought.gov/states/south-dakota/county/lawrence), but the hills generally get pretty dry in my experience.

the campgrounds all have potable water though, most of the trailheads dont, though, but thats all in the brochure.

if youre not in a huge hurry, id recommend walking through most of wind cave off-trail. the trail is also very nice, but they recommend seeing the park off trail, and i think it is a good recommendation. wind cave is underrated imo. you should see bison (lots), elk, deer, coyotes, eagles, hawks, turkeys, prairie dogs and rattlesnakes.

enjoy!
