Bear Standoff and Bluff Charge in Kings Canyon yesterday June 30th

I had an exiting standoff with a Black Bear in Kings Canyon yesterday, it was hanging around a couple that was packing up camp and didn’t want to leave, it bluff charged me a couple of times while I was covering for the couple packing up camp, was able to capture most of it on video.

Good job.. I'd guess a sick bear, very unusual behavior with all the noise you made....

Now, imagine it being a much larger griz... !

Great job in how you handled that, and great situational awareness. Obviously a very human-habituated bear.

BTW, those were not bluff charges, just the bear slapping the ground, as a signal for you to back away. Usually after a bear does that, it will back away.
Interesting behavior on the bear's part.

Thank you, good to know about the slapping!

My wife, daughter and I backpacked this exact trail last July and we also saw a bear. Though the one we saw was smaller and a little further off the trail.

Yes, lots of bears in this area, I saw two more, this one came a bit close though:)

As I said to you earlier, I took care of him the next day when we saw him near Junction Meadow lol. Great to have hiked spent a few days with you in an amazing place. Looking forward to the longer version.

I've never seen a bear linger that long even when I'm by myself. Good of you to stay with the other hiker and to warn off the approaching hikers.

Where in the park was this encounter?
