Backpacking with a bulky camera

Backpackers, how do you carry a larger camera, say at the least the size of a typical Super Zoom that is too bulky to pocket?

My current camera (Canon Powershot SX-160) is a tad bulky compared to most basic zoom P&S cameras, so it rides in a belt case that came bundled with it, on my pack hipbelt. That works out pretty well- easier to deploy on the trail than were previous cameras I carried in a pants pocket- so long as I am careful taking the pack off. I'm looking at replacing it with a larger Super Zoom type of camera, a Nikon Coolpix L830. I'm not so sure I'd want that camera in a belt case in the conditions I'd be using it. Neck carry doesn't seem like a good option while using two trekking poles. Any thoughts or suggestions?

When I carried a mid-size P&S, I did it on one of my backpack straps on the side of my chest. I used a Lowe case that would velcro around the backpack strap and then have a velcro and zipper closure for quick or not so quick camera access.
