Any mountain bikers out there?

I do some mountain biking. But at 51 I'm unwilling anymore to take the risks associated with desperate downhills. I'm also not terribly coordinated when it comes to lightning fast reflexes on ever changing terrain. Been a problem my whole life..

Although sitting in the saddle for long hours doesn't disturb me too much. If you will excuse the bragging, but recently I did the Whole Enchilada round trip from town in 9 hours, the White Rim from town in 18 hours, and a swift White Rim lap on the full moon night with that lunar eclipse. The latter was the hardest as it was sandwiched between two busy work days.

you're a beast kullaberg. That's awesome. Did you do the white rim on your fatbike, or regular mtb?

I'm not in your area, but I try and get out for a bike ride on the trails at least twice a week. If I'm lucky I can get a third ride in on an evening night. Night rides bring a whole new level of intensity.

@Tess is getting into mountain biking, and with the cold weather we've had around here lately, we've decided to head to Moab this weekend to ride some of the easy, beginner trails. We're contemplating riding at Dead Horse Point, Klondike Bluffs, or Bar M areas.

We'll be camping Friday night and riding Saturday. Anyone's welcome to join us, but it's going to be super mellow, beginner riding. I may ride Hymasa to Ahab on Saturday afternoon for a more advanced ride if anyone wants to team up for that.

@Laura , I don't think this trip will be exciting enough for Stan to want to drive out, but I'll keep you in the loop as we ride longer and more difficult trails. That being said, he's more than welcome to join us. :)

It doesn't take much to get Stan and I to drop everything and drive to Utah  Pencil in the third week in April 2015 on your calendar to hit Moab. Also, I've got a wild hair to finish the West Rim trail that we started last May, same weekend next year…...

Whoops, why didn't it quote?

awesome. I'll pencil that in for sure. We'll ride gooseberry and the other St. George trails in the next month or two. I'll keep you posted.

shoot. Thanks for the heads-up, I wouldn't have checked that. Hm... maybe we'll head to the swell instead...

Woohoo, we're Utah-bound soon!

Yup, I'm definitely a mountain bike junkie! Not gonna lie, I've got more enthusiasm than skill, but it's still a hoot. Ever gone riding in Fruita, CO? We lived in Moab for a while, but I'm still not a huge fan of super-rocky technical stuff. Fruita has swoopy, fast flow trails with lots of concentric loops. My favorite.

I have been riding my MB more then anything lately. Been going up to Winter Park every other weekend or so and car camping and biking. pretty close to my house and the resort there is very nice but I am not at the skill level needed to ride most of it. Mostly just ride a bunch of single track around the area. Camp spot a couple of weeks ago:

Do you guys prefer hardtails or full suspesnion bikes? I have a hardtail and I am trying to decide if i just want to up grade my forks or just get a whole new bike. I think it would be cool one day to try a biking trip through part of Canyonlands. I think I got the idea from a trip report read on here a while ago.

I'd say full suspension is the way to go if you're only going to own one bike. But I'm new to the sport so I'm no expert. =) Everyone will ask you, "What type of riding do you do?"

Depends on the terrain you ride. I rode most of the white rim trail on a hardtail and it was fine. I really love hardtails, but the terrain here in Utah is too rocky for me to be able to enjoy it on a hardtail. If I were back in California or the PNW, I'd own a hardtail.

I ride a full suspension now. It's a fun bike, but there's something playful about a really good hardtail that isn't quite there with a full suspension (to me). There's a new breed of hardtail coming out. I expect it to be super popular. It's the 650B+ wheelsize. It's not quite a fatbike, but it's not quite a regular mountain bike either. It's got fatter than normal tires, and I think it'd be a riot to ride.

For me, it's hardtail all day.

I just got a new 29er and I am loving it. The only reason I would get the full ride is if I was doing hardcore downhill or my legs were getting fishy.

Starting to feel like a hipster with a fixie lately though.
