    Where ever the wind blows

Thanks for the awesome report. Every time I read a trip report like this it reminds me of how great Southern Utah is, there is no place quite like it!

    First Solo Jitters

@Wyatt Carson haha that is something I wish I could witness. I have encounter many bears in all different areas of the West but the black bears in Yosemite are different. They are just so brazen and really don't care about the people. There are habituated bears and then there are the bears of...

    First Solo Jitters

@Shirt357 it might seem weird, or down right illogical, but Yosemite NP prohibits the carrying of bear spray. I don't remember exactly where I read this but their reasoning is that since there has been no bear attacks in the park it is unnecessary to carry it. They categorize bear spray as a...

Bullet to Polly's in 4 days

That is a hard question to answer... It really depends on how far you are willing to go. At least a 1/2 mile and look up to the left. If you continue about 2.5 miles down GG from Polly's I believe you will see 3 sets of ruins along the way.

Bullet to Polly's in 4 days

Honestly, whatever you decide will be great. You could just camp at the mouth of Polly's on night 3 and play the last day by ear. If you are beat then go out Gov. trail (which is a very straight forward hike) or if you still have the energy to push through some over growth, head out Polly's...

    Sheiks and Bullet Canyons

@Jackson we day hiked down Sheiks one day then backpacked from Gov. TH into Grand Gulch and camped for 2 nights at the mouth of Polly's canyon. From there we day hiked up to cow tank springs and down to just before Deer canyon. I should write up a trip report but school is just killing me right...

Yellowstone reservations from Lone Star to Bechler area

If you want a campsite close to the road with the added benefit of fishing, consider checking out Grebe Lake. Its about 3 miles of flat trail just down the road from the Ice Lake TH. It has some spectacular fishing for rainbows and arctic grayling. When I was there last July we just sat on the...

    Sheiks and Bullet Canyons

I remember last year I was getting a permit for Moonhouse Ruin and the BLM ranger was giving us the little talk and says "...make sure to take a look at the pictographs which mean whatever you want them to mean." I thought that was pretty fitting as well as entertaining. @Jackson I was out...

Big Sur or Zion Next Week?

This is also a great time for Big Sur. I am not sure how much rain they got this year but the wildflowers will sure be out in full force. You could check out Sykes hot springs (will probably be very busy) or further south check out soda springs TH to buckeye camp and down into some redwood...

    Upgrading Big Agnes tent question

The Quarter Dome 2 is a pretty damn good tent and at 88" long its one of the longer ones out there. I would also recommend checking out the Nemo Dagger, I think it is 90"x50" and I have heard good things about Nemo tents. They both weight about the same at roughly 4 lbs. I am also a pretty tall...

Water availability next week in Cedar Mesa & Escalante areas

Before we headed down there I contacted the local BLM office and got this response (although its probably out of date now) "Hello Mr. Gordon, There was some snow on Sunday, 3/4, but that has likely mostly dissipated below 7,000 feet elevation as the week has progressed. Most of our roads in...

If you had a week in Utah...

@b.stark there is a Nat Geo map, but its crap. The scale is way too big (or technically small because its a ratio? idk.) for it to be useful in the canyons. I like the Utah road atlas for driving around the mesa top but map out canyon routes using Caltopo which seems to work well. I also...

If you had a week in Utah...

I would also recommend Cedar Mesa. In my opinion you can see a lot more canyons day hiking but I love spending nights in those canyons. Easy to get into Grand Gulch via Gov. TH, Kane Gulch, Sheiks canyon for day hikes. But really you cant go wrong with any of the canyons out there. Just an...

    New Water Filter Needed...Suggestions??

Personally, I think it depends on where you do most of your outdoor activities. I have used a Sawyer Mini for the past two years and in the mountains it works great because the water is generally less sandy. In the desert it clogs up much quicker but I am always able to get through a trip and...

    A week on Cedar Mesa

In early April my girlfriend and I set out to spend a month in the Southern Utah desert. After a quick stop at the Grand Canyon we made it to Cedar Mesa in San Juan County. We settled on a campsite off of Coyote Flat Road and set off to explore. The nights were cold and the days perfect with...

Camping in Yellowstone - Part 1

My girlfriend and I just finished up spending a month camping in Yellowstone and wow, it was amazing. I dont' know how many parts this report is going to be but we will start with part one. We left San Diego on June 5th and planned to make the 1,000 mile drive over two days. But as we got into...

    Paintbrush/Cascade 3 day/2 night trip

For what its worth, I went up paintbrush canyon to holly lake about a week ago and there is some serious avalanche destruction and a ton of snow just up canyon from the lower camping zone. Not sure how fast it will melt off but we made it up with microspikes and it wasn't too bad. I can't see...
