Yes we had clear skies in late July but the skeeters were pretty bad at the lower elevations. On the return trip in August we hit a powerful thunderstorm but it did not keep us from traveling. The mozzies in August were still evident but with the storm winds, they were not as pesty.
You must like snakes sitings as much as I do. The Boa was definitely an unexpected highlight. A huge hailstorm hit us soon after seeing the snake. It must have had a warm burrow it was racing to get to.
I wanted to do a Sierra trip out of Mammoth Lakes for the summer of 2023. I was hoping to time the trip such that there would be lots of wild flowers in the high country, patches of snow still receding and mostly dry passes for cross country travel. The record snow fall in California, combined...
Looks like a fun adventure. Going up it the first time, without someone that had done it before, must have been a really good discovery stoke! Thanks for sharing!
Great report and photography all along the way. You did so many passes! YOu picked a good year for such an ambitious hike. This year many of the Sierra passes look to be covered in snow and ice into the end of August.
Wow you had some great encounters! Now I am inspired for a return trip. I think I will take balzaccoms advice and plan it later in the summer. I have never seen a badger in California. That is a highlight. I forgot about the yellow lupine bushes. They really look good in the pictures...
Just starting in on your multi part report. Part one is great! So many good pictures to pour over. Thanks for assembling this report with so much detail. i am looking forward to all the remaining pieces of the story. Thanks for carrying all the camera gear too. Those photos really sparkle.
Great series. Thanks for taking us with you. Some really good scenery pictures throughout. Funny pic of the doppleganger plant! Definitely the same shape.
Your photography is outstanding. I really like the snake picture and all of the flower closeups. The self timers are all good too. I wish there was flowing water in my county. I would love to do a trip like this every couple of weeks.
That picture of Ryan crossing from above is awesome! A really good perspective. Makes me want to climb into the picture. Were you on a high bank or did you bring a Scatman drone with you?
Like Canadug said.... another place for me to consider going to . Thanks for opening up the idea for me. In your arch pictures it looks so clear. The threat of storms must have blown in quite quickly. Was there ever any concern of flash flooding in the canyon leading down to the water?
You really hit the jackpot with the permit and the wildlife. Gives me encouragement to keep trying. Here is a link for more identification on the condor tagged with black 54, in your photo.

I am headed to Alaska in June and just found your report. Thanks for the write up. Seeing all five loon varieties would be exciting. I am looking forward to seeing the puffins up close too. Your report has me excited, wish I was on my way right now! Glad your retirement is going so well.
