I'm backpacking the Traverse (aka "Trans-Zion", west-east) next month and want to hit Angel's Landing again on my down from the West Rim. Any hints on where to hide your packs? I was thinking up on the trail above Scout's Landing.
Absolutely loved reading your TR and viewing your amazing photographs. Even though I have lots of GoPro vids of my stretch of the JMT, I wish I'd taken photos of the small lakes (Shadow, Rosalie) after Garnet.
I actually got to hike two other sections of the JMT during my time there and...
Thanks for the comments. I'm still annotating my journal entries from that trek (about forty pages long) and have 22GB of GoPro videos I'm still processing in hopes of putting together a short video. I wish I'd taken more still photos along the way during the JMT return hike.
I just watched...
Post-Script 1: I mentioned a television series called "Motion". It ran on an ABC network called "Live Well Network" from 2009-2014. Produced and hosted by brothers Jeff and Greg Aiello. Re-runs of the show are now on Outside Television.
This trip was inspired partly by the first Motion Fan...
Summary: August 15-17, 2015; three-day, two-night backpacking trip through Ansel Adams Wilderness.
Background: I was going to be around Yosemite for a couple of weeks in August and wanted to visit Thousand Island Lake (inspired by a great outdoor show called "Motion" - more later). I...
It DID happen! I did have a hiking acquaintance join me and we had a great time. Worked out nearly to-plan as well.
Thanks for suggesting a TR; I'll get one posted this week.

I'm looking for backpacking partner(s), August 15-17 for a three day/two night trip from Mammoth Lakes to Thousand Island Lake in the Ansel Adams Wilderness (east of Yosemite). Here's the plan so far:
August 15: Shuttle to Agnew Meadows, then hike to Thousand Island Lake via PCT (8.3 miles)...
That was a fun trip report to read and view. I'm like you: like to backpack solo, but if my wife can travel, we'll visit more amenable sites. In fact, I took her to Zion and Bryce in April.
You mentioned Dixie NF above your photo in St. George. That actually looks north towards the Red...
I'm piggy-backing on this post for a followup question. What issues - if any - are there with getting wilderness permits with the quotas? I'll be in Yosemite next month, but it appears that there are no more reservations for most of the TH permits (esp. around Tuolumne). What's the chances of...
Just read your TR. How amazing. I'm surprised at the availability of the campgrounds and hope that'll be the case for me when I go next month. Guess I better get me a headnet!
I've owned my Neoair Xlite for three years now and haven't had one issue. Your original review is spot on; the only negative thing for me is the noise.
For those of you who are concerned about condensation - or just hate blowing up your mattress - I have a solution. Bring a large garbage bag...
I visited Buckskin and Edmaiers areas a couple years ago and your photos bring back some great memories (and beautifully, at that).
I also saw that "mini Delicate Arch" and climbed up to get another shot facing back north down the route I took.
Not really dumbest thing, but I marvel at how much stuff I end up not using on a trip. Last November I, did a three-day backpack+bike ride in Guadalupe Mountains NP. The pack weighed 45 lbs and almost half was water because there's no reliable water in the backcountry there. I hike up 2,700'...
$100.39 this year. A lot of mine also comes from the REI card. Haven't spent it yet; I was waiting for the 20% coupons to arrive. Plus, there's usually a $20 bonus card offer when you spend $100 or more, so I'm going to wait for that, too.
Last year, I had $147 in dividends and a $30 gift...
Even though it's more expensive, I always take a Restop 2 bag. Each bag has a biodegradable chemical which not only breaks down waste but also neutralizes any odor. The bags seal very well and can hold several days of toilet paper.
If you don't mind the brush and cacti, you can scramble up the slope to the "Big Bend" granery just to the base of the cliff (about 75-80' up). However, there is a sign up there stating that the site is protected and you can go no further. It's a fun scramble though.
Petroglyph Canyon is very...
