Four Days in Salt Creek Canyon, April 2021

I think having only 4 campsites in upper Salt Creek keeps it less-peopled. We only passed a couple people on the trail over 4 days last month, which was was a much better experience than when we were in upper Grand Gulch a few weeks earlier and must have seen over 100 people.

Grand Gulch (Kane to Bullet) Water Availability

I was there at the beginning of April. Todie was dry. We found one small nasty pool of water in Todie Canyon that I would have only used in an emergency, so we continued on and found a pool that was slightly better that the Pourover. Coyote Canyon was flowing and good. We didn't stop at...

Arches and Canyonlands National Parks Accepting Comments on Proposed Fee Increases for Backcountry Operations

I've never considered The Maze a deep-wilderness, just more of a remote backcountry area that can be a bit difficult to get to, but maybe that's because it's always been a 4x4 destination for me...

Arches and Canyonlands National Parks Accepting Comments on Proposed Fee Increases for Backcountry Operations

That used to be a regulation on the permit for backcountry camping in The Maze, but I'm not sure if it's still on there? Edit- Yep, it's still on there:

Arches and Canyonlands National Parks Accepting Comments on Proposed Fee Increases for Backcountry Operations

I agree. At least Canyonlands still doesn't allow SxS's and ATV's, no matter how hard Utah tries to get them in there!

Arches and Canyonlands National Parks Accepting Comments on Proposed Fee Increases for Backcountry Operations

4x4's were the historical way to access Canyonlands. Without them the Park might never have been preserved in the first place. Read up on Bates Wilson and how he brought people into Canyonlands via Jeep to persuade them to make it a National Park. https://www.nps.gov/people/bates-wilson.htm

That $6 goes to Rec.gov, not the Park. The Park charges nothing.

Arches and Canyonlands National Parks Accepting Comments on Proposed Fee Increases for Backcountry Operations

I just wish you could get the permits ahead of time without having to go to the Visitor Center while they are open. When I went last spring just as things were shutting down for COVID they put out a self-service permit box for a little while and I was able to get my own permit late at night...

Arches and Canyonlands National Parks Accepting Comments on Proposed Fee Increases for Backcountry Operations

That's a good question. It does not mention the $30 fee in the proposed change, so I think it's just $5/night per person, but that should definitely be clarified.

I'm curious why there are no fees for day-use permits on the White Rim and Elephant Hill and they aren't proposing any increases there?
