What a real bummer. HiTR will be just another Kodachrome filled with paved roads, RV's and dog shit. I'll bet there will a big visitors center with RV hook ups and flush toilets within 5 years. Coyote is already so full of people that I skipped the last trip my hiking buddies took there.

Manitou Springs is pretty nice there are some day hikes in that area that are fun. If you are looking for a drive, I would suggest Pike Peak or Mount Evans. Both are pretty scenic and the both summits have great views, although I think the view from Mount Evans is the better of the two.

There are tons of places to camp all down that road. I quick look at Googlemaps or Earth and you should be able to pinpoint a couple of spots that look promising. If all else fails just follow a turn off until you find one.

That trip using Tex's has been on my list for a long time. Looks like it was a blast.

I would suggest entering through Crack-in-the-wall and hiking up the gulch and then out either Red well or Hurricane. Much easier going down the sand dune then up. The last time I was there I just stayed near the junction with the river and then day hiked Coyote.
