    To Do in 2026

PUNKWOOD asked: What are your typical Southwest haunts? We've been all over the Southwest, but most places are at least a two day drive from home, so they require a bit of an expedition. And it always seems as if we don't have enough time once we get there! Death Valley many times, as well as...

    To Do in 2026

I'll be teaching this spring, so no long trips to the Southwest in 2026. But I have most of the summer in the Sierra. I plan to spend a lot of it as a volunteer in various wildernesses--I've earned permission to pretty much write my own ticket there, so I will hike a ton of trails, identify any...

New reservation policies for CA State Parks

Has Anyone Else Lost the REI Mojo?

I still shop occasionally at REI, but the mojo I have lost is the lust for new gear. I have good gear, and I am happy with it. If anything, I'd like to use it more often. But window shopping--either live or online--doesn't appeal to me.

    Spain North Coast

Great report. You were sensationally lucky with the weather in this part of the world! My daughter and I hiked the Camino Primitivo to Santiago two years ago. Until the last two days when we we met up with the main Camino and it's hordes, most of the hiking was on trails or dirt roads...and...

Help Wanted: Are these mountain lion tracks?

Those do look like puma tracks to me. Coyote or dog prints have clear claw/toe marks, and the ones in your photo do not. Depending on size, they could also be bobcat...
