    Middle Cottonwood and Bridger Peak

Agreed, I'm fortunate to live here! It was a little over 9 miles altogether, 3500ish ft vertical.

    Middle Cottonwood and Bridger Peak

June 23, 2024 I haven't put a day hike on here in a while, and I figured we don't get much from the Bridgers on here, so here we go! Set out to "run" up Middle Cottonwood Canyon outside of Bozeman this morning. I forgot how much elevation was involved, which was probably for the best because I...

Greater Yellowstone Travelers: Teton Pass Closed Indefinitely

You could also take Grassy Lake Road. Not very fast but at least interesting and a bit more direct. Edit: whoops, just saw that Bob had beaten me to the punch.

They've got one up in the East Glacier area too. They were saying 8+ inches but now it's down to 6.

Here's me and Jessica out riding today. Spring/summer seems to have finally arrived here in Montana. May get out on lower elevation backpacking trip in the next couple weeks.

    Yellowstone May

That's a significantly rarer sighting than a grizzly.

Bob Marshall Wilderness, Montana, July / August, 2023, part 2 of 3

Wow, I thought the water issues were harrowing, and then they were followed up with the story about Tad and Devan. Goodness. Gives me chills thinking about how fortunate it was you were there. "Hours to live" is wild. This was an incredible write up, and I'm looking forward forward to going...

YNP: Morning Falls north/upstream from Scout/Ouzel pool near Union falls

Can confirm this. I went up a few hundred yards past the pool/fall right there last year. That whole area is not too bad for off trail travel. Gets a little bushwhacky here and there but not bad. I haven't been up to those falls in question before.

    New guy from Montana

Welcome! Where in Montana? There's a few of us on BCP that live here.

    Yellowstone NP Campsite Reccs

There's a few sites around Heart Lake that allow fires. That's a classic Yellowstone backpacking destination that you should check out if you haven't been. Mid August and later are best so you can avoid bugs.

    2024 Permits/Lotteries

Today's the day for YNP backcountry lottery results, so that made me want to check and see how everyone fared if they put in this year. And also if you've put in for other backcountry, river, etc. permits elsewhere, how those have gone. Let's hear it! After not getting a spot last year, I...

    Amazing details! Love seeing these.

    Greetings from Ohio!

Awesome! Are you working for the NPS? Some great backpacking there near the south entrance, not a lot of people on those trails.

    Winter

It's never too late! Nothing hits quite like a trip to somewhere warm and tropical in mid-March. I went to Hawaii almost exactly two years ago and the timing was just right, being late winter. It's 60 here today though, so the warm weather came to me instead this year.

    Winter

Looking pretty grim up here also. Winter so far has not given me much hope for a turnaround later this month or in April. Guess it's time to dust off and tune up the gravel bike.

Good to see you back! Fantastic photos as well. I was back in the Salt Lake area over the weekend and conditions were very nice for hiking.

    PCT Survey 2023

Great point on the methods, and I appreciate the insight! I'm mostly an outside observer of UL/thru hiking culture through sites like Reddit, so there's some observer bias on my part too. You know how reddit can be. I was surprised the Durston tents were priced so low. Pretty solid offerings at...

    PCT Survey 2023

It's also interesting in that some brands are overrepresented while other large ones don't even show up. Presumably because the online thru hiking/ultralight community, like most other hobby communities online, becomes a gear optimization echo chamber, and everyone ends up mostly sticking to the...

    Winter

Heaviest snow I've shoveled in years. Had forgotten what that was like. Fortunately only a couple inches of it for us in the valley.
