    Bechler 5

September 27 - October 1, 2024 Here it is, several months late. We did our annual fall trip to the SW corner of Yellowstone in 2024. This was the fifth year in a row (hence the uncreative title). We varied the route again, but most of it was a repeat of things we had done before. This time...

    Guess the spot: Maps Edition

Haha I have not, but my friend has. He said it was one of the hardest hikes he's done. Trail was in poor shape and impossible to find higher up the canyon. And I guess the way was not intuitive once they lost the trail. He showed me pictures of the lake though, and it is amazingly beautiful...

    The Power Pant .......

It's too bad because they used to be excellent. Lots of other solid brands out there at least.

Scapegoat Mountain, Scapegoat Wilderness. That will be a really cool trip!

    Pebble Creek

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of it and had it become an irrational fear haha.

    Pebble Creek

I noticed that I could fit into one, no problem. Haha. The problem is that there didn't seem to be a way to get yourself out if the door latches and no one is around! Makes sense they would phase them in since they require a lot less effort than a hang.

    Pebble Creek

I'm intrigued! Were you doing it in the dark? We saw a mountain goat in Bechler Canyon once and it was very surprising. I guess they are good at finding their way into unlikely places.

    Pebble Creek

Be sure to go for it! This route was good, and it would also be cool to link it with Slough if you can get decent sites.

    Pebble Creek

If you were feeling adventurous, you could do it as a day hike and try hitching for a shuttle. Or doing a shorter out and back starting where we finished. Worth a visit for sure! (I thought about mentioning you when I was talking about flat tire issues in this one)

    Pebble Creek

That was 3P4. They had little plaques on them indicating they had been donated by/funded by some nonprofit (Yellowstone Forever perhaps?), but I can't recall if there was a year written on the plaques. They seemed pretty new. Very good condition and clean.

    Weekend in the Pintlers

Whew, yeah that would probably get me to turn around too. Haha. Beautiful but not optimal! Definitely get back there! Later September and October would be great times to go to see the larches when they have turned yellow.

    Pebble Creek

September 13-15, 2024 Continuing with the old trip reports since the covid isn't gone yet, here's one I did in September on Pebble Creek in Yellowstone. I had just finished up at a 3-day work conference at Fairmont Hot Springs, so I went home to grab my mostly pre-packed gear and headed toward...

    Snow Season 24-25

Sounds a lot like down here in Montana too, until this past week. Still too warm, but the mountains have been getting good snow recently at least. The xc skiing up there looks great!

Gila Winter Solstice 9 Day Loop

Pretty cool to get a good mountain trip in in the second half of December! Is that area usually snowbound by then, or does it just generally not get much snow?

    Weekend in the Pintlers

August 17-18, 2024 Sitting here with covid, I decided to mix up my sitting and laying around by writing up a report or two from the past season. This route mostly followed the CDT as I understand it. It was just right for a weekend trip. We started off the day by setting up our shuttle. My...
