    Guess the spot: Utah Edition

I think that's likely in the background, so it's yours. We had exited Burro Wash and were headed back to the car!

    Guess the spot: Utah Edition

Definitely not Canyonlands side. This is a not-so-stunning approach to a cool spot. We we were walking away from it at this point though.

    Guess the spot: Utah Edition

You're thinking correctly. Because it's pretty generic looking unless you've been there, I'll add that this is just probably a half mile or less outside a national park boundary.

    Guess the spot: Utah Edition

Definitely has me wondering where you're standing still! Looks a little higher/more precipitous than most of the bluffs around there that aren't north of Torrey.

Teasdale area with Boulder Mountain in the background?

Naturalist Basin: Blue Lake to Shaler Lake?

    Hope it's a blast!

Naturalist Basin: Blue Lake to Shaler Lake?

I'm not sure I understand the question. I was just saying if you wanted to spend two nights up there, it could make for a good way to spend some time on the second day. Then you'd hike out the day after. You could probably do it and hike out on the same day too if you really wanted.

Naturalist Basin: Blue Lake to Shaler Lake?

I thought one night was enough, personally, but I also don't sit in one place for very long backpacking. I'm not familiar with the peaks around there, but it looks like Spread Eagle Peak could be a good summit for day 2 if you decided to do two nights. I don't fish, but if you do, that could...

    Guess the spot: Utah Edition

Not quite! It's within probably 8 (straight line) miles of where I took the photo though.

    Guess the spot: Utah Edition

I was going to say- sure doesn't look like there's any trail in the photo! Let me rummage up a photo. Coming up with new Utah Guess the Spot content is getting harder since I haven't lived there for a bit!

That's definitely Dromedary, O'Sullivan, and Twin Peaks. So how about Mill B North?

Naturalist Basin: Blue Lake to Shaler Lake?

Ditto what @Ugly said. The vegetation is also pretty sparse, so at most, you may have to pick your way through some bushes here and there if you lose the social trail, but you can always see where you're going. Easy navigating. Faxon Lake was pretty dried up when I went. Le Conte was my...

    Reid's Peak - Uintas - July 22, 2023

Awesome! I remember looking over at it and thinking it looked like a pretty tough (for me) summit. Looks about as challenging up close as it does from afar! Nice work! Love how expansive the views are. That's pretty nuts it's been 6 years since we took that picture. Such a great chance encounter!

Smartphones and how to get your battery to last...

Mine lasts for probably 6 days on airplane mode while being used to take pictures. I usually don't bring a charging block unless I've got my inreach as well and am going to be out 3 or more nights.

Favorite backpacking foods...convenient, easy, delicious, nutritious?

This is the main reason I do Mountain House, Peak Refuel, etc. for dinner. I don't want to have to clean dishes when I'm backpacking in grizzly country. Too much of a hassle, I don't want to drink gray water from cleaning, and I'd feel irresponsible if I dumped it out on the ground since it's an...

Ecuador Mountaineering: Cayambe, Antisana, & Chimborazo - June 2023

Awe-inspiring! What an incredible trip that must have been. Very cool to have had your family there with you too.

    Those who cairn too much

I don't think many if any users here would advocate for kicking down cairns on slick rock traverses with no other directional indicators. This is all about doing it on clearly marked trails where there is absolutely no purpose for them, just like in the video. Really got a kick out of your...
