    Into the Escalante

Over the brilliant fall weekend of October 20, drclef, nick, Dan Ransom, Zoemaster, two Lake Tahoetians and myself ventured off into relatively undocumented territory through the heart of Escalante. A mercilessly muddy 3 day backpackaneering bushwack would follow. Our ambitious route would take...

    High Spur

Superb! You've got some really nice shots in here, Dennis. Great capture. This one's on my shortlist, as I've heard nothing but great things. I can see why! Well done. By the way, what a webbing cluster**** on that last rappel. Been seeing more and more of that lately. Much more of an eyesore...

    Sterling ATS Descender

gloo, have you ever ascended with your ATS?

    Sterling ATS Descender

I'm curious about these as well. But If you're already doing fine for now with 8mm ropes on short raps on the Pirana, then I really wouldn't worry about it until its time for your Pirana to be replaced. Rare is the situation when you'll be going single 8mil on a long rap anyhow, as most people...

    Behind the Rocks

Most excellent adventure! Thanks for sharing.

    Opinion?

Like everyone else has said, I prefer the first. I'd brush in a little more contrast in the foreground and maybe knock the exposure down 1/3 or 2/3 of a stop or so in the sky with the graduated filter tool (and maybe even sneak in a tiny bit more saturation in the sky to pull out more of those...

    I give up

I know what you mean, video editing can be a chore. Looking forward to those long winter nights to help me catch up on everything. I'm interested in comparing the footage we've each captured in the last few canyons. GoPro vs Contour. I might just be swayed to take this off of your hands.

Poison Springs: Arscenic, Constrychnine & Slideanide

Epic TR. I've done Arscenic but still need to get into the other two. Awesome photos as well. Do you carry a tripod into technical slots or are these all handheld?

Nice TR! I passed through Silverton once a few years back; your story brought back some fond memories.

    Buckskin Gulch current conditions?

I think so. I'd be weary of the bag route though. The first time I went through two years ago, one of the members in our party had their bag leak...lets just say it was a fairly brutal experience. This last time I went through I used an old Nalgene bottle (bagged first). Anything with a hard...

    Buckskin Gulch current conditions?

Gross. We didn't have any of that to deal with in early April. I can see how that could ruin the site. And Chris, this brings up another good point. Sorry if I'm repeating what you already know, but you actually are required to pack your poo out...

    REI Attic Vs. Garage Sale

From what I understand it's not a replacement, but just an added bonus. FWIW, I was told by an employee (at the 3300 store) about a month ago that they'd be removing the "Attic" soon to make room for all the winter rental gear, but to look for it to return again in the spring. Sure hope so, I...

What device do you prefer for Canyoneering?

My experience is with an ATC, Figure 8, and Pirana. Pirana is my favorite hands down, mostly due to its easy variability in friction. I also find it the easiest to set up with.

    Buckskin Gulch current conditions?

Hi Chris, I can't help you with current conditions, but I do have a little bit of advice. I'm assuming you haven't been through Buckskin before? I'm sure you've read/heard about the rockfall obstacle that you'll encounter a mile or so from the confluence with the Paria. You'll probably find...

    Album Your Personal Favorites

This is my all-time favorite, taken from the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake last summer. Not so much because of the image itself, but more so because it's the exact spot where drclef and I would later share our first date, watching the sun rise over the Wasatch whilst sipping on ice cold...

Fall and Winter on the Grand Mesa

Serendipitous timing! Turned out to be a magical afternoon. "Fall to Winter" is my favorite--you captured a wide range of tones here very well.

It may be light pollution, but "the Notch at Night" is still an insanely mesmerizing photograph. Well done on the rest, as well.

    Spry Canyon, Zion National Park

Thanks for posting, Brutus! Spry has somehow evaded me thus far, but is high on my list. How was it without wetsuits? Was there a moment when you wished you had one? Also, how are the rope pulls? Anything tricky?

Beaver Park, Wind River Range: Sept. 1-3

Thank you for the kind words, everyone! Care to divulge on this? Curious about what you experienced. As for us, we experienced the exact opposite of eco-nazis: a couple of young punks rolling boulders off of a 200 ft cliff, basically right above the trail. The entire valley sounded like it...
