Temporal variations of the same scene-Madison Range, MT

Oh Montana, how you call to me with your great expanse of open beauty. Often while sitting in traffic in the urban hell that is the Front-range of Colorado, my mind wanders to the Bob Marshall Today most of my day trips involve parking along highways because the lot is full, waiting for...

    Buckskin Gulch

I like the wire pass start. The parking area can get crowded from the wave crowd but it is a quick walk and your in darkness. As I recall the camping that is along the route out to Whitehouse are not permit required. As I recall it is about 18 miles from Wirepass to the Whitehouse trailhead...

    Buckskin Gulch

It's a long haul to the ranger station, I think around 50 miles or so. The gulch itself is a good day hike and if your leaving by whitehouse, there are some decent camping spots after the confluence. It is pretty rocky so I would recommend good shoes and a good solid pack. I dropped pack for...

Dumbest thing taken on a backpacking trip?

It has changed with age. In my early 20's I packed a 2 foot glass bong on a four night in the Uintas. The bong broke obviously, and then I had to pack out a bunch of very smelly sharp glass pieces. Recently a buddy of mine started backpacking and bought the big 85L Arcteryx, he took it out...

    Backpackers Bed

Thanks guys, I tried one out a couple of days ago and found that while the quilt idea is cool, it's not cool enough to justify spending that much on it.

    pack size

I use a 65 for just about everything. The Osprey Atmos is my current bag and I love it. 65 can be a bit big and does add a little bit of weight but it works well for me. In reality I probably spent more money saving weight on all of my other gear to keep my kit weight down whiel still using the...

    Water filters

I was hesitant with the gravity filter as well. My brother bought one and during a trip with him I was sold. I do still have a couple of pump filters I used a while back and they work well. For me, I like being able to go pull 6 liters of water at once the whole group uses it to cook, make...

    Backpackers Bed

Anyone using one of these? http://www.backcountry.com/sierra-designs-backcountry-bed-elite-sleeping-bag-39-degree-down?ti=U2VhcmNoIFJlc3VsdHM6YmFja3BhY2tlcnMgYmVkOjE6NzpiYWNrcGFja2VycyBiZWQ&skid=SDS003D-SIEDESYL-SHO 1 lb 13 oz for the long seems a bit heavy at that price point. I do like the...

Legislative resolution: Drilling is ‘best use’ for Cedar Mesa and San Rafael Swell

Blah, it is to bad the Great Year takes so long to cycle. By the time we get out of these dark ages and back into advanced society there might be nothing left. It defiantly is a tough situation with no easy answers. In my humble opinion, we should not do anymore exploration for resources. We...

    Water filters

Gravity filters for me. I use a platy and have for four years or so exclusively. When I find myself drawing out of nasty puddles, I use a bandanna to filer out the chunks when I fill the dirty bag. I find I have replaced the filter about once a season so I just buy one each year. I LOVE not...

Legislative resolution: Drilling is ‘best use’ for Cedar Mesa and San Rafael Swell

They should come drive through Colorado. When I moved to Denver from Ogden, I had to buy a guidebook to find any trails to hike. EVERYTHING is private property. All over the Denver area there are rigs, I literally dive past at least 20 full sized rigs just driving to work in Boulder from the...

    Backcountry Vehicles

My Xterra heater gets cool when I stop at lights or at the drive-through. It is a 2011 and I have heard that the 2nd gens have the issue. Only on super cold mornings though. Never been much of an issue for me, i just turn the heater off when it happens. Still the best looking SUV when...

    Any musicians out there?

I play all kinds of flutes. Mostly Native American but I have a couple of Asian styles and a didgeridoo as well. The one I have been playing around with recently is an Asian style and is actually the exact same style and maker as the one David Carridine used in Kill Bill. All are so unique...

    Backcountry Vehicles

Lol, testy thread at times. Just goes to show different strokes for different folks. For my part, I have had a Tacoma, a jeep, a very old Legacy Wagon, and old 2wd Datsun pickup, and now an 2011 Xterra. All were great and got me where I needed to go. I bought the Xterra new and I would buy...

    Guided River Trips

I went down the Grand with my dad on one of the larger guided trips about 15 years ago. The group was about 20 people on two boats. Most were from back East and were not what I would call outdoorsy folks. We rode a big bus to Lee's Ferry and all of our kit was there. They provided everything...

Low budget high value backpacking tent?

I have had a few different tents over the years, but I almost always use my REI half-dome. I simply just love the tent. Lots of headroom, I am 6'4", and plenty of room for the wife and I. Plus I can fit both of my dogs on one side of the vestibule and all my gear in the other.

    DLSR Noob Question

Thanks for all of the great advice. I am leaning toward the Cannon at this point, they do seem to have a better selection of lower cost lenses.
